Who is Kitty Pryde: A Brief History
Apr. 15th, 2014 01:38 amName: Katherine "Kitty" Pryde
Age: 18
Childhood: Born in Deerfield, IL to parents who would later divorce. Kitty was a bright child, with high academic aptitude and a talent for ballet. Her powers developed at 13, after being plagued by headaches.
Powers: Mutant - "Phasing" powers allow her to become intangible - arranging her atoms to fit in the spaces between the atoms of matter and elements.
Backstory: Kitty is in the odd place of having had to grow up way too fast, while being coddled and babied at the same time. She joined the X-Men at 13, a good many years younger than the other team-members at that point. In the coming weeks, she was kidnapped by Emma Frost (a moment she considers the first time she ever knew evil) , and witnessed Jean Grey, one of the X-Men who welcomed her with open arms succumb to the Phoenix force.
Away from home and peers, Kitty was homesick. And though she put on a brave face, the barely-teen would sometimes cry herself to sleep. Not to mention the nightmares that occasionally followed confrontations with frightful villains. But she developed close relationships with role models Logan and Ororo, and in particular, a crush on fellow X-Men Piotr, who despite admitting to mutual feelings, protested that she was too young. Eventually they began a brief and mostly-chaste relationship, but ended when he developed feelings for another woman. Despite her heartbreak, they maintained a strong bond. At some point not long after, Kitty was possessed by a Ninja Demon who bestowed upon her a lifetime of martial arts training and the skills of a ninja assassin - which remained even after his defeat - adding another level to her abilities.
Kitty continued to grow from young girl to young woman alongside the X-Men, her naivety giving way to a more sardonic personality along with her inherent idealism. Her naivety faded even more when left under the impression that the X-Men had been killed. Kitty joined a new team in Britain, developed a much more mature relationship with a special agent, and even did some freelance counterhacking work for SHIELD.
Fortunately, the X-Men resurfaced, very much alive. But her beloved Piotr sacrificed his life to prevent the spread of a mutant virus. Still reeling from his death, Kitty has returned to Professor Xavier and enrolled in university, seeking a new direction.
Building upon her already impressive computer tech skills, Kitty is studying Computer Science in the School of Engineering and Astrophysics.(blame canon for that weird combination) Due to college credits earned in her school days, she will be taking a number of upperclassman courses along with the Freshman requirements.
Notes:
1) Kitty is particularly outspoken about matters of justice and tolerance. This is not only due to prejudice she's faced as a mutant, but anti-antisemitism she was exposed to in her youth, and also likely dating back farther, to her grandfather who was a Holocaust Survivor.
2) Kitty is a skilled hacker.
3) Kitty likes comics and geekery almost as much as we do, probably.
4) Her dragon Lockheed is friendly, unless you're a suitor he does not approve of.
5) Though Kitty has never engaged in a non-heterosexual relationship, she is bi-leaning.(As supported by a whole hell of a lot of canon subtext)
OOC: Canon can be revised should any character mentioned in this history join the game. As for reconciling this with Charles - I figure Storm and Cyclops were more involved with the "X-Men" while he was recruiting, setting up the school, etc. Does that make sense?
Plot? Connections? Comment away :)
